6 Tips To Help You Create Better Video Content

Writer: Kaitlyn QuinlanKaitlyn Quinlan

Recently, we’ve noticed a big push for video content across all social media platforms. Social media users remember 95% of the message given in a short-form video compared to 10% of a message read in text form. Platforms are noticing that short-form videos deliver the highest ROI compared to other marketing trends. Hence, platforms like LinkedIn are starting to prioritize video content in their feeds. To help, we’ve compiled 6 tips to help you create better video content.

Focus On “The One”

Stop starting videos with “Hey guys” and start using phrases in the singular form. This way, you’re pretending to have a conversation with one person, which makes the viewer feel special and creates a more intimate connection. While you want to reach a wide audience with your video, it's important to create personal connections with viewers who may become followers, consumers, and clients.

Smile For The Camera

We get it, it can be awkward talking to a camera! But smiling and acting happy while talking or acting on camera makes you more likable. People only watch content they enjoy, and no one is going to enjoy watching you if it seems like you're miserable. You don't need to be over the top excited (unless you really are that excited), but throwing in a couple of smiles will go a long way.

50% “Eye Contact”

When you’re talking to a camera use a normal amount of eye contact, don't stare down the camera the entire time. When you have a conversation with a person, you don’t hold eye contact the entire time, there are natural breaks and pauses where you look away. It helps if you pretend there is no camera on you and you are just having a conversation with a friend. This tactic helps you come off as more authentic and relaxed.

Stop The Scroll

You have about 3 seconds to catch someone’s attention and encourage them to watch the rest of your video. A good way to do this is by introducing the video topic in a fun and engaging way. Viewers don’t want to sit through a video if they don’t know what they’re watching. We've noticed brands doing this by showing a big action occurring at the end of the video within the first 3 seconds.

Simplify & Streamline

Viewers don’t want to go down a rabbit hole with you. Stick to one (at most two) topics in your video. If you have more than one topic, make sure they go together. Your video should flow and not confuse viewers. If you really want to talk about a million different topics, you should turn it into a video series. This way you can stick to one topic per video, but you can have a wide umbrella topic they all fit under.

Don’t Forget The Caption

Captions increase viewer retention. We recommend putting most of your information in the caption. Viewers don’t want to read fast or pause a video to get information. They’re more susceptible to remembering and reading the information if it is presented in the caption.

As with anything in social media, experimenting is key. Find out what video techniques work for you and your brand. And most importantly, have fun!
